The Faculty of Forest Sciences is responsible for research, teaching, environmental monitoring and assessment as well as outreach and collaboration in the field of forestry, including forest ecosystems and their sustainable use. Together with the other SLU faculties, the faculty is also active in the fields of food, production, health, quality of life, environment and water.
The majority of the faculty’s 700 employees and 850 students are based on campus Umeå, in facilities shared with the university of Umeå. The faculty houses 13 departments and a large number of collaborative centres.
The department of forest ecology and management, Faculty of Forest Sciences, SLU is looking for a postdoctoral fellow on the role of extreme events on stream biogeochemistry. Main duty is characterizing and quantifying the role of extreme events for determining the concentration and quality of DOC in stream water.
We seek a Post-doctoral Fellow that can work towards providing a mechanistic understanding of how extreme climate events (ECEs) impact the concentration and quality of dissolved organic carbon (DOC)DOC in the boreal forest landscape of northern Sweden. ECEs can regulate the transfer of materials from terrestrial to aquatic ecosystems and thus have a potentially wide range of biogeochemical and ecological implications for fresh waters. In particular, given diverse physical, chemical, and biological influences of DOC, a better understanding of how DOC concentration and quality in streams and rivers is shaped by ECEs remains an important research challenge.
The successful candidate will work with combining process-based hydrological knowledge with state-of-the-art DOC quality analysis and modeling. The project will utilize a unique water-sample archive combined with a stream water quality database to provide empirical data on DOC concentration and quality during historical ECEs and then use this information to reduce the uncertainty of the role of future ECEs on DOC. The successful candidate is expected to start during winter of 2017.
The position is fully funded for two years of full time work. The location of the position will be at the Department of Forest Ecology and Management, SLU in Umeå, Sweden, which supports an international environment in terms of both research and teaching. The department has about 75 members of staff which 12 are professors. Our mission at the department of forest ecology and management is to advance the understanding of forest ecosystem processes and to progress the principles of forest ecosystem management.
SLU is seeking a highly motivated individual with good communication skills in English, both orally and written, and a strong work ethic. The successful candidate will also be a ‘team player’ who will work well within in a strong research environment. We are searching for a person with a PhD in stream biogeochemistry, hydrology, or related field. Previous experience with DOC characterization and modeling is a merit. Experience with field collection methods, analysis of large datasets, and the use of R, Matlab or other statistical programs is preferred
