The High Level Meeting on Zero Hunger in Africa: Toward African Renaissance

BACKGROUND:Renewed Partnership for a Unified Approach to End Hunger in Africa, is jointly convened by the African Union, the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) and Brazil’s Lula Institute. The meeting will commit to a set of principles, policies and strategies to resolve the problem of hunger by 2025, which will feed into the national and regional Agriculture and Food Security Investment Plans of the Comprehensive Africa Agriculture Programme (CAADP).WHAT:High-Level Meeting For Africa on Zero Hunger: “Toward African Renaissance: Renewed Partnership for Unified Approach to End Hunger in Africa by 2025 within the CAADP Framework”.WHEN:29 June - 30 June – 1 July 2013. The meeting will take place as follows:
  • 29 June- Multi stakeholder Dialogue session, starting at 09:00 (GMT+3)
  • 30 June- High level ministerial session, starting at 09:00 (GMT+3)
  • 1 July- Meeting of Heads of States and Governments, starting at 09:00 (GMT+3)
WHERE:African Union Commission, Addis Ababa, Ethiopia.WHO:The meeting is organized by the African Union (AU), the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO), and the NEPAD Agency with the support of Instituto Lula and the Government of Ethiopia.Key speakers will be African Union Chairperson and Prime Minister of Ethiopia Mr Hailemariam Desalegn; African Union Commission Chairperson, Dr Nkosazana Dlamini Zuma, UN Under-Secretary-General and Executive Secretary of the Economic Commission for Africa (ECA) Carlos Lopes; FAO Director-General José Graziano da Silva; and Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, former President of Brazil and Chairperson of Instituto Lula.The meeting will be attended by African Heads of State and Government and Ministers of Agriculture of African Union Member States, together with representatives of international organizations, other partners, private sector and civil society organizations concerned with ending hunger in Africa.WHY: A key objective of the partnership is to continue to rally high-level political resolve, leadership and commitment among African and international leaders on decisive policies and programmes to eliminate hunger.The meeting will also brainstorm ways to support African countries, their governments and organized civil society to incorporate successful experiences from other countries.EXPECTED OUTCOMES:A Declaration expressing political commitment to promote and unify African and international efforts to fight hunger; for exchanges in technological development; to boost the resistance/resilience of rural communities and to build and rebuild rural livelihoods; and assure food security for urban populations.CTA and ARDYIS attending the event.
